The Hydration Abacus + a gift

mad mim_hydration abacus

As part of the mammoth (it feels mammoth to me) effort I’ve made to keep up my milk supply, drinking lots of water has been one of the key (and easier) things I’ve done that has helped. I try to drink about 8 to 10 full glasses of water a day, and since here in Provo we’re blessed with nice cold and tasty water, I try to just down a glass every time I’m at the sink. Trouble is though, I could never keep track of how many glasses I’d had, and often would just forget.

Problem: I can’t remember to drink water! I can’t remember how much I’ve had/need!
Solution: The Hydration Abacus! It reminds me in such a nice, cute little hanger sort of way, and it tallies my hydration status! Now every time I’m at the sink, I get a little excited to push a bead over after a nice tall glass of the good stuff. And by that I mean H2o.

(and yes, I did all those dishes this morning. But usually my dish-washer does the dishes (and by dish washer I mean Allan), so I can’t complain too much).

After I finished making my abacus, I let Twinkle use my leftover paint and she made me this sweet little bangle as a gift. She was going to make wait until my birthday (in October!), but she bended a little and let me open it five minutes later. I love it! Like really, I’ve worn every day since then. I have an awesome bracelet, and I feel so well hydrated!

Is proper hydration the best!?

PS a word on keeping my milk supply up: I had tried Fenugreek with nary a difference, and had tried pumping frequently, hydration and anything else I heard to stimulate more milk without any success. I was ready to throw the towel in and use formula, but a friend of mine recommended Motilium to me. She had had a friend who had used it successfully to boost her supply, but I was too doubtful and poor to try it out. She surprised me by buying me a two month supply (!!!), and after talking to my doctor-dad, I tried it and was THRILLED when it TRIPLED my supply. I now only have to supplement a little at night, which is so great.  I’m almost out of it (Motilium), so I’m going to see if my supply maintains, and if not, I’ll have to get some more. It’s definitely worth it. Just FYI, to anyone interested in this stuff.

I need one of those!!!! On my eating plan (never say die-t) I am always trying to keep up with those chugging numbers. My method for tracking thus far includes looking at the color of you know what, which is a rather ex post facto way to do it, if you get my drift (“ahh dang, I totally need to drink more”– the daily mantra, I’m afraid).. And I l-l-l-l-o-v-e (!) your bracelet, plus Josie’s generosity for deducting 7 months, 6 days, 23 hours and 55 minutes off of your wait til your birthday. So great. I love that you proudly wear it, and I totally would, too!

Hello… I just discovered your blog (really enjoying it… thx so much), and I thought I’d let you know about ‘milk cookies’ in case you hadn’t heard of them. I never had a problem with supply (very lucky), but my bestie swore by these. Anyway, all natural and cheap – so worth a shot I reckon 🙂 Check them out here: http://www.bellybelly.com.au/breastfeeding/breastmilk-supply-increase-breastmilk-lactation-cookie-recipe
Now… back to exploring your blog. 🙂

I was wondering where u were able to get the percription to boost your supply? I live in the US and would have to order it online. Do u know of a legitimate website?

The same website that is linked to in my post is the website my friend ordered from. I live in Utah, and got it fairly quickly no problem. Good luck!

Great idea, I always have a hard time remembering how much I drink too, esp. since sometimes I dump the water from my water bottle before I finish it!
I’ve never heard of the medicine you mention, but it’s great to add another item to my list of recommendations. Other things worth mentioning…with fenugreek, it’s hard to take enough. Nine capsules per day, along with nine capsule of blessed thistle (they work best taken together). That’s a lot of large capsules. But taking the recommended amount for the last two weeks of my cycles really helped me (I’d line up all 18 pills on the counter and take one every hour. Gag.). I’ve also heard good things about the lactation cookies. Flax seed and oatmeal promote milk production. Staying away from some stuff is equaly important…sage, trans fats, hydrogenated oils, and mint are drying (even mint gum or Lifesavers could be an issue).
I love all your sewing projects, your kids must have been adorable for Easter!!!
