Gold Polka Banyan Tee and Bow Band Leggings

I have at least half a dozen back-to-school outfits for Twinkle that I’ve photographed but haven’t posted. What can you do. Too little time, and too many other things to do.  We’re trying to buy a house as you may remember, and we found one and put an offer in (their asking price), and they countered at $4,000 OVER their asking price. Como se wha??We went back and forth and they wouldn’t come down, so we said peace out. So we’re still looking, and man oh man is that hour-and-fifteen-minute-commute-in-GOOD-traffic getting old as the hills.

This is one of those outfits that I make by the boatloads, but doesn’t always get blogged. It’s cute, functional and beloved by the wearer, but so simple that it doesn’t always make the I-HAVE-to-share-this-on-the-blog cut. Well here’s to go-to outfits and designs! This is Figgy’s Banyan tee, which is one of my all-time faves. It’s just so whimsical and comfy. It’s a great tee pattern too, I’ve made it without the handkerchief hem, and it’s got the perfect amount of swing.

The leggings are Ottobre, from issue 4/2012 #15. There are several leggings patterns throughout the all issues though, and they’re all wonderful.  I just love the little bow band at the bottom, it’s become my standard way of  finishing  leggings because it’s adorable and  fast and doesn’t require hemming.

Another thing I want to mention is how AWESOME it is not to be sewing my kid’s Halloween costumes this year. I know that Halloween is typically when the National Mom League dusts off their sewing skills to make their kid’s costume fantasies come true, and I’m usually right there with you. But I’ve gotta say, there is nothing so sweet as an off year, and that’s the truth. I got a real high off checking their costumes off my list in a matter of 5 minutes in the costume aisle at Target.  So there! Better make a note of the time I advocated buying over sewing!

Did they forget to list the actual price? That is so weird. I can imagine that the commute is getting super old. Hopefully there isn’t too much construction on the roads.
Hope you find a house soon, In an area you want. 🙂

I’m so right there with you on Halloween this year. It feels awesome. I’ll get back to DIY costumes next year. Maybe… Anyway, I love this outfit. And now I’m so curious about how to do that little bow finish!

It’s really easy, you just add a little tab around the band to scrunch it in, maybe I’ll do a tutorial on it sometime:) And for real, not sewing costumes has been amazing, I may never go back! Yeah, right. I’ll totally be back..

No, because we offered their full asking price so quickly they thought they had underpriced and thought they could get more out of us. It was LAME, but it’s still on the market two weeks later, so…jokes on them.

Yep I’m with you on the costumes. I’m all for making if the inspiration is there but if the kids want the power ranger from Costco then yahoo for that. You daughter looks darling in her outfit!

Amen! My little man wanted to be Batman with the muscles and all, and I was like, I can’t do that better than Target!;)

Oh man, bummer about that house. We’re stuck in home-buying limbo right now and a situation sorta similar to that one you had. Except we put an offer in on a short sale home at the price the bank approved. When the seller accepted our offer the bank decided they weren’t going to honor the price they approved. Grrrr… so now we sit and wait to see what’ll happen.

Best of luck to you on this journey!

Ooh….house buying is such an emotional roller coaster. It is so hard for me not to fall in love with the what ifs and the maybes. My husband stays so level headed, calm and collected! I hope the hunt goes well….

And I love your girl’s outfit! This is my favorite kind of sewing for my kids…practical and very wearable…yet really cute!

I have recently discovered your blog and am sorry to hear about your difficulties buying a house. You’ve made some lovely clothes for your little ones! I look forward to reading your twisted neckband tutorial, as other sites on the internet have vague instructions. Kindest regards.

This is just the cutest, and so is Miss Twinkles! I love that tee, and the leggings are more than cute, especially the hem. How adorable is that? Very! I think it’s terrific to take a year off for the Halloween costumes, great to know you aren’t driven to sew because you HAVE to, but rather, because you WANT to. Condolences on the groaner house experience. Sounds like it’s their loss, not yours. Greed cometh for a fall . . . . or something like that . . . Good luck on that one . . .

Twinkles’ hair is so long and she’s growing up, wow how pretty. I love that free spirited looking leap. What a fun detail that you put on both of the bottom of the sister’s pants that looks like a pretty bow tie.

I can say I’ve never made a costume from scratch and could bow down to anyone who has. Good for you for buying yours this year, can’t wait to see pictures. I just saw Twinkles searching for something in her perfect Never Ending Story Princess look alike, it was pretty amazing!

Love and Miss you something fierce,
Em
